Sorry. I really hate to bring maths into this forum. But I am trying to teach myself calculus (because idiot) and this one question has me mighty confused.

XJ 220 for your time

Now with the question: 1334= -p^2-5p+1400.

The book says p = 6. I don't see how. I get (p+6)(p-1)

Nope, no engineers here.

edit: seriously though, maybe I can remember things... it's been a while

Would help if you posted the question, we are not THAT smart.

lol. 1334 = -p^2-5p+1400.

How can P be $6?

I get p = -6. (p+6)(p-1)

Let's see if this fancy aero degree learned me anything.

ok fixed. This is just algebra.

ok I put up the question. Just basic algebra, but since idiot cannot into factoring...much confusion.

Alright, after simplifying, I get 0=p^2 +5p -66

Plug it in to the quadratic equation [(-b +/- (b^2-4ac)^(1/2)]/2a

Then you get solutions of 6 and -11

EDIT: fixed... doing shit in your head can lead to errors...

Kinja'd!!! thebigbossyboss > Enginerrrrrrrrr

Kinja'd!!!0

well it's -p^2 -5p. But you have made me see the problem. Why did I think that 1400-1334 was 6. Fuck me I'm dumb.

Edit: I'm an idiot and can't do basic subtraction.
p^2 +5p -66 =0
(p-6)(p+11)=0
p=6 p=-11

check my reply again, you can get it, I just tried to do it in my head. hint... always write down all of your steps...

and no worries man, we've all been there

Many thanks man!! Got into a stupid loop trying to factor it when I can't even get the basic subtractions. when you get it to p^2+5p-66 it becomes obvious the factors are (P+11) (p-6) and therefore (there was limited domain due to application (price point) that p is 6.

Kinja'd!!! That's Engineering? > thebigbossyboss

Kinja'd!!!2

The answer should be p=6 and p=-11. Set p^2 to be positive and set all on one side. You get

P^2 +5p - 66 = 0. Factor to get (p+11) and (p-6) = 0.

Therefore, p=6 and p=-11.

I'm beginning my masters in mech. Eng. In the fall. This had better be correct haha

Thanks. For some reason I confused myself by thinking 1400-1334 = 6 not 66. Then I was trying to factor...goodness.

Edit: I should add restrict domain (price) so yes p = -11 but restrict domain.

Nice! I actually just started doing my masters in Mech. E this summer after being out of it for a few years. And google is your friend ;)

Cool! What are you writing your thesis on, or are you going the non-thesis route?

Kinja'd!!! Enginerrrrrrrrr > That's Engineering?

Kinja'd!!!0

My professor pretty much threw a thesis at me so it was hard to say no. I basically get to develop a computational toolbox that simulates everything going on inside of an Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometer so we can predict the outputs based on adjusting input conditions. Basically I have to use Navier-Stokes equations and Boltzmann a lot along with DSMC. I've also decided to do it in a year.

It's going to be a very long year.

How about you? What's your plan?

Oh wow! I hope you drink coffee if you plan to complete that in a year! But, that does sound interesting. As for myself, I am not sure yet as to the exact topic of my research/thesis. However, it is very likely that I will either be working in engine/combustion research or vehicle system modeling and simulation (in something like Matlab/Simulink). Conveniently, my university's mechanical engineering department places a fairly heavy emphasis on vehicle technologies, which is an area in which I would like to eventually work. And I will be doing it in two years, as I will also be teaching a class during this time.

Nice! That sounds really cool. My school focuses on aerospace more, so the models I am dealing with are more related to low-density gases with high speeds and vacuums...like space :D It does involve a lot of MatLab as well ;)
If you don't mind me asking, where are you going to school?

The University of Alabama. They paid for my undergraduate degree, and now they are paying for my master's degree. Which is nice. The fact that we completed a new $50ish million engine/combustion lab about a year and a half ago is an added bonus. You?

That sounds really awesome. I was always jealous of the schools with a sweet auto program.

I did my undergrad at Colorado School of Mines, which was rigorous and got me ready for the real world, but nothing really specialized.

Now I am at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Honestly I was surprised they even had a program. Turns out they have a lot of ties with the DoD and space aeronautic firms. Space! My specialty is literally called Space.
